The Bladder and Bowel Service is a specialist nurse-led team for children from the age of 5 upward to adults of all ages providing quality assessment, treatment and management of bladder and bowel problems that impact on the quality of everyday life.
Many people will be affected by bladder and bowel problems at some stage in their life. It is estimated that 14 million men, women and children of all ages are living with bladder problems and 6.5 million adults in the UK suffer with some form of bowel problems
Bladder and bowel problems are common and, in most cases, treatable, but they are poorly understood. Our specialist skilled team feel passionate about the need for clinical assessment and personalised care planning, with dignity in care being at the heart of this confidential service.
All patients referred into the service are offered a comprehensive assessment and provided with a treatment programme to either improve or cure their symptoms, they will not be offered products unless treatment fails or is not possible. If containment pads are prescribed, it will be according to the patient’s assessment and clinical needs.
Who we see
Our service is open to anybody registered with a GP in North Lincolnshire with the ability to get to a clinic appointment at various locations across the county home visits can also be arranged for patients who are housebound and unable to attend clinic for a continence assessment

What we do
The service specialises in continence care and aims to help patients and carers as much as possible whilst they are dealing with bladder and bowel problems.
This can include:
- Assessment, development and ongoing treatment or management plans for your particular continence problem
- Tips to promote a healthy life style and some behavioural changes to improve or control symptoms i:e changes to diet or fluid intake
- Pelvic floor exercises
- Pelvic floor examination
- Prescribe and review medication
- Support bladder or bowel training programmes
- Provide continence products or appliances when clinical indicated
- Catheter Clinics
- Catheter Care
- Trial without catheters
- Supporting with Intermittent self- catheterisation
- Pessary changes
- Stoma support
- Teaching and supporting with Anal irrigation
- Continence aids to improve access to toilet facilities
- Telephone support for patients and healthcare professionals
What we treat
Approximately one in four people will experience bladder or bowel symptom. It can include men and women of all ages. Despite being a common problem, it is still something that we may feel embarrassed about
Seeking help can really improve your quality of life with the right assessment, treatments, and management programme. With the right treatments and products everyone can be helped to effectively manage, improve and in many cases even cure their condition.
Continence symptoms of problems may include:
- Stress incontinence: leaking when we cough, laugh or sneeze
- Urge incontinence: leaking before we reach the toilet.
- Having to go to the toilet more frequently
- Having the sudden urge to pass urine
- Having to get up more frequently at night
- Having mobility difficulties which stop you being able to get to the toilet in time.
- Having problems with constipation or faecal incontinence
If you have any of the following symptoms and have not seen your GP, please see your GP first.
Bowel
- blood in your poo that happens for no obvious reason – it may be bright red or dark red
- a change in how you poo – such as going to the toilet more often or your poo becoming more runny or hard
- feeling lower tummy pain or bloating, (when your belly feels full and tight)
- you’ve lost weight
- you feel you haven’t emptied your bowel properly after a poo
- you feel more tired or dizzy than usual
Bladder:
- pain with weeing
- Frequent urine infections
- Passing blood in your wee
- pelvic pain
- Unable to pass urine
