Support is on hand for patients who are worried about their sight.
A new role has been introduced covering Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Goole hospitals.
Joanne Almey is the Trust’s first ever Eye Care Liaison Officer (ECLO), in a role funded by the RNIB.
From emotional and practical support to referrals to other services and support groups, Joanne has a wide is here for patients and their family and friends too.
Staff in the eye clinic, and other departments can refer patients to Jo and people are welcome to contract her directly as well to seek support and advice.
Speaking about her role, Joanne said: “Eye conditions can be quite complex, my role is to offer timely support to people soon after their diagnosis. I’m here to support the health and wellbeing of patients in the eye clinic. From talking through their treatment to helping them gain a better understanding of their condition, to signposting people to the many charities and support organisations out there. I basically act as a bridge between the hospital and community services. I can talk to you about your worries and give you advice on how to lessen the impact your eye condition may have on your life. I’m also here to support carers and family members who need additional support.”
The service runs as an open access service without appointments. People can pop in to see Jo when she’s in the eye clinic, or call or email.
Jo will be based at Scunthorpe hospital on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. At Grimsby on Wednesday’s and Thursdays and will be visiting Goole on a monthly basis. Although is still contactable by email or phone.
Some of the things Joanne can help with include:
- Living with sight loss
- Eye conditions and treatment
- Welfare benefits
- Remaining in employment or re-training
- Mental health and emotional wellbeing
- Aids, equipment and technology
- The legalities around driving
- Referrals to RNIB services including courses and audio books.
