Our Trust Board

The Trust board of directors is responsible for the day-to-day running of the organisation and is held to account by the Council of Governors.

Sean Lyons

Chairman

Sean joined us from Lincolnshire CCG, where he was Chairman until 2021. Prior to this he was Chairman at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust steering the organisation out of special measures and helping to oversee improvements to its CQC rating.

Sean left school before A-levels and went straight into an apprenticeship in the steel industry which he says was hugely enjoyable and gave him a real appreciation for the shop floor .He went on to complete a degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA and then made a move to British Steel Stainless in Sheffield. This company merged with a Swedish company and Sean worked his way up to Senior Vice President before a return to Scunthorpe where he took up a Director post running the plates and sections businesses, ultimately becoming Director of the Scunthorpe Steelworks in 2007. He retired from the steel industry in 2011 and then in 2013 made the move to the NHS. Sean is also Chairman of the West Nottinghamshire college in Mansfield, a role he will continue with. Sean is also the Chair of Hull University Teaching Hospitals (HUTH).

Jonathan Lofthouse

Group Chief Executive

Jonathan  was appointed as the first ever Group Chief Executive for Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust on August 2023. Overseeing five hospitals sites in the Humber region Jonathan has a workforce of over 17,000 people and is responsible for a budget of over £1.4bn

In a little over 12 months, Jonathan has appointed a new executive team, implemented a new operational structure, developed a set of group values, and launched a new strategic framework. The Group, now referred to as NHS Humber Health Partnership is one of the most improved NHS organisations in the north for reducing long waiting times for surgical patients and yet has also made cost savings in excess of £50m in year.

 

Jonathan was previously Site Chief Executive (Princess Royal University Hospital and South Sites) at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London and has significant experience of not only working in but also developing a group leadership structure within that organisation. Prior to this he was Director of Improvement at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.   Jonathan has worked both nationally throughout England and Scotland and internationally on behalf of the NHS in China, Qatar and Australia over his 32 year career and has a professional pedigree for Operational improvement and turnaround.

Linda Jackson

Vice Chair/Non-Executive Director

Linda Jackson is originally from Cleethorpes and studied hotel, catering and institutional management at Grimsby College before graduating with a Diploma in Management from the University of Reading. Her career in facilities management began in1986 in London working for ISS Facility Services, who provide facilities services across the NHS, where she remained for 28 years.

Linda quickly worked her way up the ranks to hold positions including regional director; eventually working nationally across multiple NHS organisations. Linda became board director at the age of 38. In her last 10 years in the private sector she undertook a transformational change role with responsibility for implementing the company’s new business initiatives nationally within the NHS, and latterly involving a 2-year secondment into the Royal Air Force.

Linda moved back to Grimsby and joined Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust in 2014 as a Non-Executive Director and since then  has undertaken the role of Deputy Chair and has also been Acting Chair on two separate occasions. Linda was made the  Vice Chair of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust and Associate Non-Executive Director of Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust  in April 2020. Most recently, Linda has been instrumental in supporting  both organisations with the transition to a Group  operating model including aligned governance and decision-making.

Paul Bytheway

Interim Group Chief Delivery Officer

Paul is an experienced public and third sector board director, having served nearly all of his career in the NHS and has held the role of Chief Operating Officer across a number of NHS Trusts over the last 10 years, he believes that in order to improve we must engage our people are the most important aspects of operational delivery!

Paul began his career in the NHS in 1990 as a health care assistant before training to be a registered nurse, moving into general management in 2003. He brings a wealth of experience from his clinical and operational roles through his career in the NHS alongside his commitment to benefits of volunteering.

Paul is passionate about developing people and communities and supporting people to be the best they can, he holds a number of other roles in his local community, including trustee and Chair of the Quality Governance Committee at Birmingham Hospice, Chair of Saint John Ambulance Priory West Midlands and Independent Governor at University of Wolverhampton.

Dr Kate Wood

Group Chief Medical Officer

Dr Wood studied medicine at Glasgow University, graduating in 1994. She started work in anaesthetics in 1999 training in Hull, during which time she worked as a Senior House Officer and Registrar at Grimsby Hospital. She loved her time in Grimsby so much she returned in 2006 when she was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist. Since then she has held a number of managerial roles including Lead for Obstetric Anaesthesia in Grimsby, Clinical Director, Associate Medical Director and Deputy Medical Director and Acting Medical Director.

Ivan McConnell

Group Director Strategy and Partnership

Ivan is a qualified accountant who has over 25 years experience of leading national and international healthcare programmes of change. Ivan has held an Executive Director role in a large NHS Trust where he had responsibility for strategy, performance, transformation, ICT, contracting, commercial development, estates and partnership working. As a Director within a Tier 1 Management Consultancy practice Ivan delivered some of the largest change programmes within healthcare and local government in some of the most challenged political and operating environments in the country. He has delivered high profile national and international projects reporting directly to Government Ministers, Departmental Permanent Secretaries and Regulatory Bodies. This has included the South East London reconfiguration “A Picture of Health” along with a national programme for elective care improvement in Ireland. Ivan also led national programmes on behalf of the Regulator looking at Service Line Management and Performance Improvement. As an Executive Director Ivan led the development of a System Wide Strategy for the STP and was a member of a national MCP Vanguard Board testing the principles of Alliance Contracting. He led a number of cross system improvement programmes and successfully tendered in partnership with clinical colleagues for large scale research funding programmes. Ivan also had responsibility for management of a pooled budget for a s75 agreement for the delivery of integrated health and care pathways.

Simon Nearney

Group Chief People Officer

Simon joined us as our Interim Director of People in January 2023 and took over the role of Group Chief People Officer in November 2023. He also holds the position of Director of Workforce for Hull University Teaching Hospitals where he has been in post since 2012. Previous to this he was Director of Human Resources at Leicestershire County Council and has held several senior Human Resources and Organisational Development management roles in large public sector organisations. Simon has a track record of transforming services, leading major organisational change programmes and improving the customer experience.

David Sharif

Group Director of Assurance

David studied Management Sciences at Warwick University before first joining the NHS in Manchester in 1991 and then the regional finance training scheme in the West Midlands. He qualified as an CIPFA accountant and worked extensively across the acute sector in that region before joining KPMG in 2002. During that time he worked as both an internal and external auditor in the NHS and on various projects to strengthen governance in the NHS and other public sector bodies. He left KPMG in 2020 to join King’s College Hospital prior to joining the Humber Health Partnership in March 2024.

Amanda Stanford

Group Chief Nurse

As Group Chief Nurse and Executive Director for Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals (Interim), Amanda is responsible for the professional leadership of the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional workforce, non-medical education and training, safeguarding and patient experience and is the Director of Infection Prevention and Control. Amanda shares responsibility for the Quality and Safety portfolio with the Group Executive Medical Director.

Amanda was appointed to the Interim Group Chief Nurse post for Humber Health Partnership in April 2024, prior to this Amanda was the Chief Nurse and Executive Director for Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals at Airedale NHS FT and Director for Quality and Patient Safety. Amanda has worked for the Care Quality Commission as a Head of Inspection (2014 to 2017) and Deputy Chief Inspector (2017 to 2019) for Hospitals and has extensive NHS operational and nursing experience.

Gill Ponder

Non-Executive Director and Senior Independent Director

Gill joined the Trust in April 2021 as the Chair of the Finance and Performance Committee, which also encompasses Estates, Facilities and Digital objectives. She is also a member of the Audit, Charitable Funds and Remuneration Committees and is the lead NED for the Surgery and Critical Care Division and for Security. Gill is an accomplished senior executive with over 40 years’ experience leading a wide variety of functional areas, including HR, Training, IT, Finance, Legal Practice Management and Governance, Field Operations and Management Consulting, where she specialised in strategy, resourcing and business turnaround.

Gill holds a postgraduate certificate in management from the Open University and is a Chartered Manager member of the Chartered Management Institute.

Sue Liburd

Non-Executive Director

Sue was appointed in October 2022. She is the Chair of the Workforce Committee. Sue is a Registered General Nurse, Mental Health Nurse, and Midwife, and has over 20 years’ experience in Organisational Development, Innovation and Cultural Transformation gained working in the UK and internationally. Sue is an experienced public, private and charity sector non-executive, Managing Director of Sage Blue Consulting, a Deputy Lieutenant for Lincolnshire and the Independent Chair of Lincolnshire Maternity and Neonatal Services. Her worked was recognised in 2016, when she was awarded an MBE for her services to Business, Charity, and Voluntary organisations.

Simon Parkes

Non-Executive Director

Simon is Chair of our Audit, Risk and Governance Committee. He joined us in September 2021 from the University of Lincoln where he is Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer. He has extensive experience as a chief financial officer with over 13 years at Board level in the Civil Service, higher education and third sectors. An FCMA Chartered Management Accountant, he also holds a Diploma in Company Direction with the Institute of Directors. Simon lives in Lincolnshire and in addition to working for the Trust is a Non-Executive Director at a Registered Provider of Social Housing and also a Lay Canon and Chair of the Finance Committee at Lincoln Cathedral.

Stuart Hall

Associate Non-Executive Director

Stuart has spent a large part of his career working with FTSE 100 company, Santander. A fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Stuart is experienced in a range of areas from governance and HR to strategy development, and a Director of a Community Interest Company. He has experience as a Director of Community Interest Companies specialising in vocational training and end of life care.

Stuart is also the Vice Chair at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust..

Julie Beilby

Associate Non-Executive Director

Julie has a passion for public sector services. She believes they make a major contribution to the happiness, health and wellbeing of individuals and our communities. Julie has worked in the public sector for 40 years, fulfilling a broad range of roles in the same Local Authority. Most recently as Chief Executive of a District Council for 11 years.

Julie has been engaged with the health sectors on a variety of platforms. Julie has been involved in the development of an ICS , and believes this brings the opportunity to have different dialogues that focus on the broader determinants of peoples health and wellbeing. Julie is experienced in  exploring the thinking and the positioning of multiple stakeholders, trying to secure a mutual understanding and agreement on a route forward.
